Legal Gay Marriage Comes to Florida

On January 6, 2015, I married the very first gay couple in Duval County, Florida. Tim and Garlyn Purcell took their vows with tears in their eyes, the sun on their shoulders and the whole world watching on the steps of the courthouse. It gave me tremendous pride to be a part of this historic moment in Jacksonville and I’m humbled to have made them so very happy.

Same sex marriage is coming to Florida in a big way. Today the first gay wedding was performed in the state and I perform my first legal gay wedding tomorrow morning on the steps of the courthouse in Jacksonville. Gay marriage in Florida is a red hot topic right now, and I just love Dolly Parton’s response to gay hating conservatives admonishing her over the high number of LGBT visitors to Dollywood, her amusement park in Tennessee.

Best line in the article in support of gay marriage, “I think everyone should be with who they love,’ she said. “I think gay couples should be allowed to marry. They should suffer just like us heterosexuals.”

Inevitably whenever same-sex marriages are in the news, I know my phone will ring with the next reporter looking for an interview. It gives me great joy to share my knowledge with others in hopes of shortening the time line allowing all those in love to legitimately marry.
